Today, Elizabeth Moody became acting Prisons and Probation Ombudsman on the retirement of Nigel Newcomen CBE.
This is an interim arrangement while the recruitment of a permanent Ombudsman is completed.
Elizabeth has a wealth of experience in a wide range of Civil Service posts, and has been the Deputy Ombudsman responsible for investigating complaints by prisoners, probation supervisees and immigration detainees, since 2009.
Elizabeth said, “It is a privilege to be stepping into the role of Acting Ombudsman. My aim will be to maintain the PPO’s reputation as a professional and influential organisation by:
- continuing to produce investigations of a high quality;
- promoting the lessons from our investigations to help make custody and community supervision fairer and safer; and
- ensuring the office is in the best possible shape for the arrival of a new permanent Ombudsman.
“I will be assisted by the two excellent Deputy Ombudsman – Richard Pickering (Fatal Incidents) and Kimberley Bingham (Learning Lessons and Strategic Support) – and by the dedicated team of staff across all parts of the office. We look forward to working together to maintain momentum and prepare for the appointment of a new Ombudsman.”
